Here is a list of our Got Shabbat programs for 2016-2017:
Friday, September 9: 60th Anniversary Kick-off Shabbat Celebration
Friday, October 28: Simchat Torah Got Shabbat with Klezmer Band
The term Klezmer comes from the Hebrew words klei, meaning “vessel,” and zemer, meaning “song,” literally meaning “instrument of song.” This was the Yiddish word by which the musicians were known in Eastern Europe. The spirit of this year’s Simchat Torah celebration will feature a local Klezmer band as we honor the Torah and begin it anew.
Friday, November 11: Veterans Day Got Shabbat
Honor our veterans. Hear their stories. Value their sacrifices. Consider the values worth fighting for.
Friday, December 23: Chanukah Shabbat
Join us for a very special Shabbat as we celebrate the sixth night of Chanukah as a Congregation. With Chanukah music, candle lighting, songs and more our celebration promises to be truly joyous. We will have a Chanukah Cookie Decorating and Latke Oneg following services.
Friday, January 13: Deli Shabbat
Ziggy Gruber (owner of Kenny & Ziggy’s) will join us for the evening as we explore the joys of Jewish dining. The theme of this year’s Deli Shabbos experience will be “How the laws of Passover Shaped Jewish Cuisine”. Join us for dinner and services and learn that Pessedeka (kosher for Passover) can be a delicacy.
Friday, February 10: Tu B’Shvat Shabbat
A Tu B’Shvat Seder will serve as the structure for this special evening of celebration. The custom loosely modeled on the Passover Seder and four cups of wine will help us explore the renewal of nature and the Divine flow of energy which pulses through all existence.
Friday, March 17: Jews of Ireland Shabbat
Join us for an Irish feast followed by a worship service shaped by the melodies and stories of the Jews of Ireland. Much like the Jews of Spain, the Jews of Ireland were under great pressure to convert and suffered their own kind of Inquisition. Many went into hiding. Hear their story.
Friday, May 12: A Mostly Music Shabbat with Mike and Dee Dee
Magnificent harmonies and an engaging presence on the bima are at the core of what Dee Dee Dochen and Mike Kahn bring to a Sabbath worship experience. They have been singing as a duet in a variety of worship settings throughout Houston for years, and this Sabbath they will bless us as well.
