Community Read at the JCC Ann and Stephen Kaufman Jewish Book & Arts Festival: Concealed by Esther Amini
November 9 @ 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Join us for our November book talk! We’re participating in the Community Read at the Jewish Community Center Jewish Book & Arts Festival again this year (this time, it’s virtual).
The book this year is Concealed: Memoir of a Jewish-Iranian Daughter Caught Between the Chador and America by Esther Amini. In her debut memoir, Esther Amini tells the story of growing up in 1960s New York in a Persian-Jewish household. The American-born daughter of parents who fled Mashhad, Iran’s holiest Muslim city, is caught between two worlds – the dutiful daughter of parents who craves more independence than tradition permits. Exploring the roots of her family dynamics, Amini uncovers her parents’ difficult journey to the United States, where they faced a threat to their traditions: the threat of freedom.
Esther Amini will discuss her book with Angela Himsel at the Community Read. Angela Himsel is the author of A River Could Be A Tree.
