Early Texas Jewish Settlers, 1830-1845: Were They Really Jewish, and if so, Who Were They Presentation with Kay Goldman

Come learn about early Texas Jewish settlers on Sunday, May 7th at 10:30am in-person at HCRJ!

HCRJ member Kay Goldman will present on her recent work, “Early Texas Jewish Settlers, 1830-1845: Were They Really Jewish, and if so, Who Were They?”, which appeared in the January 2022 volume of the Southwestern Historical Quarterly 

Kay was awarded the 2023 Lynna Kay Shuffield Memorial Award in Texas Jewish history for this manuscript. This award was established by the Texas Jewish Historical Society to recognize an excellent work of scholarship in the field of Texas Jewish history.

John Williamson Moses, a lawyer, judge and writer, was part of a large South Carolina Jewish family named Moses. He traveled to Texas about 1840 to survey sections of South Texas and earn a land grant. After his job ended, J. W. settled around Cuero and lived in South Texas until his death in 1893.
