Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo – Did You Know?!
The first show, held in Sam Houston Hall in 1932, lured some 2,000 attendees with free barbecue and impromptu rough-and-ready rodeos.
In 1942, Gene Autry became the show’s first star entertainer, and the first calf scramble was added.
The show presented its first scholarship in the amount of $2,000 in 1957.
In 1961, the organization changed its name to Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
The show moved to NRG Stadium and NRG Center in 2003 from the Astrodome.
2.5 million attendees came to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in 2019. 73% came from Greater Houston, 21% from Texas but outside Greater Houston, 5% came from the other 49 states and international guests represented 1% of the attendance.
