Hamentaschen Baking Day

February 28, 2016 by HCRJ Web Admin Leave a Comment

Purim is Coming!  Purim is Coming!

Join us for a morning of coffee, conversation and hamentaschen baking!   Hamentaschen made will be used for our oneg and Religious School.

This is a great way to get involved and meet new people.  No experience needed.

Want to make hamentaschen at home?  Here is a recipe we found on Reform Judaism.org

Ingredients:
2 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 cup sugar
2 eggs, beaten
1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened
1 teaspoon vanilla
Filling:
6 ounces chocolate chips
1/2 cup sugar
1 tablespoon milk
1 tablespoon butter
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 egg, beaten
Directions:
Combine all dough ingredients and blend well to make cookie dough. Roll thinly on lightly floured board.
Combine all filling ingredients except egg in a small saucepan. Cook over low heat until melted. Remove from heat. Blend in egg.
Cut dough into circles and place one teaspoon of filling in each center. Pinch up sides to form 3-pointed hamantasch.
Place on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes.

From Russia with Love – Shabbat Dinner & Service

March 20, 2015 by HCRJ Web Admin Leave a Comment

A Got Shabbat from the Pale Settlement

Russian Dinner at 6:00 PM (Dinner is full)
Shabbat Services at 7:15

The shtetl of Eastern Europe was the epicenter of a world which was isolated in time and space. As a result, it became a crucible for Jewish culture, literature and music.

Join us Friday night, March 20, as we will celebrate the cultural heritage of the Jews of the Pale Settlements.

All are welcome to join us at 7:15 Friday nights for Shabbat Services. You do not need to be a member to join us in prayer as we welcome the Sabbath bride. Immediately following services, we gather together at the oneg (joy) for cookies and conversation.

HCRJ uses the modernized edition of the Union Prayer Book. This prayer book contains extensive transliteration of most of the Hebrew prayers, thereby enabling those who do not read Hebrew to participate in the liturgy. We encourage you to discover within its pages a fresh approach and a return to the ideals of Reform Judaism.

gotshabbat? 1st Annual Deli Shabbos Dinner & Services

November 21, 2014 by HCRJ Web Admin Leave a Comment

The history of Jewish deli food speaks directly to who we are as a people.

This history reflects life in the shtetl; it is shaped by the laws of our faith; and it exemplifies early ways of preserving food before refrigeration. Walking into a Jewish deli today is like walking into an interactive food museum where Jewish history, culture and cuisine come together to educate as well as satiate.

On Friday night, November 21 we will be welcoming Ziggy Gruber (owner of Kenny & Ziggy’s) to the pulpit for our First Annual Deli Shabbos.

Ziggy is preparing a very special Shabbat Dinner followed by a sermon about the meal during services. The theme of this year’s Deli Shabbos experience will be chicken. Join us for dinner and services and learn everything you ever wanted to know about the Jewish aspects of chicken from soup to chopped liver. We promise you will not leave the synagogue hungry.

DINNER IS SOLD OUT, BUT COME TO SERVICES AT 7:15 PM AND HEAR ZIGGY GIVE THE SERMON
